Lünen. In order to be able to provide, when requested, concrete and binding proof of the savings achieved in the area of primary raw materials, energy production and CO2 emissions by each individual customer, REMONDIS commissioned the independent institute, ATZ Entwicklungszentrum headed by Prof. Martin Faulstich, to develop a software-based tool with which the savings achieved by recycling measures can be scientifically evaluated and documented. This certificate was presented for the first time to the press and other professionals during the IFAT ENTSORGA in Munich, the world's largest trade fair for the water and environmental service branch.
For the first time, REMONDIS and ATZ presented this unique sustainability certificate which is based on software developed by Prof. Faulstich and the ATZ Entwicklungszentrum and enables the savings achieved by the recycling measures of each customer to be individually certified. The whole of the chain of services provided by REMONDIS is included in the analysis from the collection of the waste at the customers', to the transport, sorting and processing, to the recycling of each fraction. An environmental balance sheet is calculated along the whole of the recycling chain for a selection of waste types, which are generated by the commercial and industrial customers and which REMONDIS has been commissioned to treat. Such waste includes paper, cardboard, card, plastic film, plastics, wood, glass, biowaste and green waste, kitchen and canteen waste, cooking oils and fats, food that is unsuitable for human consumption, cooling appliances as well as old metal.
At the end of the analytical process, the customer receives an individual sustainability certificate from REMONDIS and ATZ, the results of which it can use for its own environmental balance sheet. These results - calculated using IT processes and based on an international ISO standard - not only provide proof of how CO2 emissions have been reduced but also give detailed information about the volume of primary raw materials saved and concrete figures on savings made in the area of energy (given in kW/h).
This instrument is unique within the branch and frees the REMONDIS customers from their dilemma: those who have been successful and have grown their businesses in Germany have, in the past, had to pay for this growth with negative values in their environmental balance sheet. Now, REMONDIS can provide positive proof of the benefits gained from the additional production waste for their customers. The REMONDIS sustainability certificate is now available to those customers who are interested in having detailed proof of the positive effects their recycling activities are having on the environment, on reducing energy production and on conserving natural resources.
REMONDIS is one of the world's largest water and environmental service companies with over 500 business locations in 29 countries across three continents. The company's main goal is to provide professional services that ensure our natural resources are used in an economic and efficient manner. With this aim at the forefront of its activities, REMONDIS is active in the areas of water supply and wastewater treatment, recovering raw materials from waste, developing innovative recycled products and providing alternative sources of energy. With the same commitment, the company also processes residual and hazardous waste, once the hazardous content has been minimized, if materials recycling for these products makes neither ecological nor economic sense. By closing material life cycles, REMONDIS is contributing towards protecting the environment as well as helping to prevent water pollution and climate change.
